Welcome to Our Reading Challenges
We are excited to share our termly reading challenges with families. Each challenge is designed to encourage a love of books, stories and reading at home, while being accessible to all of our pupils.
Instructions for each challenge can be found on the attached challenge sheets.
If your child completes any of the activities or challenges, please let their class teacher know. Families are also welcome to share photographs of their child taking part by uploading them to Seesaw.
Class teachers will celebrate participation and award the appropriate certificate once challenges have been completed.
Reading Activities
Alongside our reading challenges, we have also included a selection of reading activities linked to the topics and texts pupils are studying in school this term. These optional activities provide opportunities for families to enjoy stories together, explore new interests and extend learning beyond the classroom.
What Does Reading Look Like?
At our school, reading is much more than reading words on a page.
Reading may include:
Listening to stories
Looking at pictures and sharing books
Turning pages independently
Joining in with rhymes and songs
Exploring books through play and sensory activities
Practicing phonics
Communicating about stories, characters and events
Reading words and sentences independently
We encourage families to adapt all activities to suit their child's interests, needs and stage of development. The most important thing is spending time enjoying books, stories and reading together, helping to develop confidence, communication and a lifelong love of reading.
